I am writing today as an Albany County resident, and as the founder of Guilderland Indivisible, to call on Albany County airport leadership and stakeholders to cancel Albany County’s contract with Avelo Airlines.
Avelo Airlines has been complicit in the Trump Administration’s steadfast determination to deny due process to not only immigrants, regardless of their status, but to U.S. citizens.
Albany played a pivotal role in the American Revolution, a war in which we fought for freedom from tyranny. Our legacy demands that we continue to fight the tyranny of an administration that seeks to divide us. The question of immigrants’ rights is not a political one — we have a moral imperative to welcome the stranger and to treat them as one of us. Due process applies to all persons, and Avelo Airlines has been detrimental to that process as they aid and abet the anti-American orders to ICE to engage in extrajudicial detentions of immigrants.
Avelo Airlines is not the only game in town. Why is the county putting their necks out for this anti-American corporation that seeks to subvert the constitutional rights of immigrants? Stop rewarding bad behavior.
If you truly believe in the rule of law, the constitutional right to due process, and in the humanity of all people, you will call on your colleagues to join you in cancelling the Avelo Airlines contract. Stand on the right side of history; the day of reckoning will come as it always does. How will you answer?
